Drywall Damage: When It's a Patch and When It's a Bigger Problem

Drywall is honest: it shows you exactly where it hurts, but not always why. A doorknob hole is a patch. A crack that keeps coming back, or a stain that keeps growing, is the house telling you something else is wrong. Here is how to tell the difference.

Simple patches (usually $150–$400 professionally)

Cut-out repairs (usually $400–$900, depending on size)

Larger holes, damaged corners, and any soft drywall need the damaged section cut back to solid material and a new piece fitted, taped, and finished. Texture matching is the skill part — orange-peel and knockdown textures can be matched well, but the patch will still flash through cheap paint, so plan on painting the whole wall, a good excuse to use our interior painting guide for sheen picks.

Warning signs of a bigger problem

Most drywall calls we run turn out to be honest patches, and we will tell you that. But when the wall is evidence, we start with the cause — it is why drywall work sits inside our broader home renovation services rather than as a standalone patch-and-go.

Common questions

Small cosmetic holes, yes — patch kits handle those well. Where DIY usually disappoints is texture matching and water damage: cutting into a wet wall without finding the leak just schedules the same repair for next season.
Either the house is still moving (settling or foundation), or the repair used only surface mud without tape and fasteners. A crack that returns twice deserves a cause check, not a third patch.
With matched texture and the full wall painted corner to corner, yes. Spot-painting just the patch almost always shows as a dull flash at certain angles, even with the exact same paint.
