Flooring for Houston Homes: LVP, Laminate, Tile, or Hardwood?

Houston humidity makes flooring choices for us, whether we like it or not. The floor that looks great in a showroom can cup, gap, or swell here if it is the wrong material in the wrong room. Here is how the four main options actually hold up in Spring-area homes.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)

The most popular floor we install now, and for good reason: it is waterproof (the rigid-core kind), tough under dog nails, warm underfoot, and typically runs $4–$8 per sq ft installed. It goes in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and whole main floors without transitions. The catch: it needs a flat subfloor — bumps telegraph through — and very cheap thin LVP wears at the surface. Buy the wear layer thickness, not just the color.

Laminate

Typically $3–$7 per sq ft installed. Modern laminate looks remarkably like wood and resists scratches better than real hardwood. Its weakness is water: even 'water-resistant' laminate has a fiberboard core that swells if water sits. Fine for bedrooms and living rooms with careful owners; risky in bathrooms and entryways.

Tile

Typically $6–$12 per sq ft installed. Nothing beats tile in wet areas — it is the only floor that genuinely does not care about water. It is also the coldest and hardest underfoot, grout needs sealing and occasional cleaning, and a bad subfloor shows up as cracked tiles. In kitchens and bathrooms it remains the long-life champion.

Hardwood and engineered wood

Solid hardwood typically runs $8–$14 per sq ft installed and can be refinished for decades. In Houston it demands humidity control — consistent A/C year-round, no wet mopping. Engineered hardwood (a real wood face over a stable core) handles our climate swings better and is the safer wood choice here. Neither belongs in a bathroom.

Matching floor to room

Bathrooms and laundry: tile or waterproof LVP. Kitchens: tile or LVP. Living areas: any of the four, by budget and pets. Bedrooms: whatever feels best underfoot — this is where laminate shines. Remodeling a bathroom or kitchen? Pick the floor before the cabinets — the order of decisions matters as much as the materials.

Common questions

Rigid-core LVP with a thick wear layer. It is waterproof against accidents, resists nail scratches better than wood or laminate, and individual planks can be replaced if one is damaged.
The surface may be, but the core and the seams are the weak points. Water that gets through a seam swells the core from inside. Treat laminate as water-resistant, not waterproof, whatever the box says.
A typical 500–800 sq ft area takes 2–4 days including subfloor prep and trim. Tile runs longer because of setting and grout cure times.
