5 Signs Your Roof Has Storm Damage

After every big Houston-area storm, we inspect dozens of roofs. Most homeowners are surprised — the damage is real but invisible from the ground. Here are the five things we look for, and what you can check safely yourself.

1. Bruised or cracked shingles (hail)

Hail doesn't always punch holes. Often it bruises the shingle mat — you feel soft spots when you press. Granule loss in round patterns is the giveaway. From the ground, look for dark spots or inconsistent coloring.

2. Lifted or creased shingles (wind)

Wind gets under shingle edges and creases them. A creased shingle is a broken shingle — its seal is compromised and it will fail early. Look for shingles sitting at odd angles or flapping edges.

3. Granules in the gutters

Check your gutters and downspout splash blocks after a storm. Piles of granules mean your shingles took a beating. Some granule loss is normal aging; sudden piles after a storm are not.

4. Dented vents, flashing, and gutters

Hail that dents a metal vent also hit your shingles — metal just shows it more honestly. Dented flashing around chimneys and skylights is a strong indicator the roof needs a professional look.

5. Water stains inside

By the time you see a ceiling stain, water has traveled. Check the attic after rain — daylight through the decking, damp insulation, or musty smell all mean call now, not later.
